King of the Fretless Guitar
After the impressive 1995 comeback of critically acclaimed Westcoast guitar
legend and psychedelia songwriting master, Darby Slick ("Somebody to Love"/Jefferson
Airplane, ...), in form of the unique father-and-son project SandOland (Taxim
TX 2022), he steps out on his own with his completely instrumental CD "King
of the Fretless Guitar".
The title, given to him by numerous highly respected guitarists of the fusion
rock guild, is equally the concept of the entire record. Slick performs his
original material strictly on his own only backed by famous drummer and friend
Scott Mathews.
Deeply influenced by the music of his mentor and famous Indian sarod player,
Ali Akbar Khan, he sets a new standard when it comes to defining the future
sounds of the electric guitar. His musical craftsmanship combined with an exceptional
modern artistic vision sets him apart from what we usually call "avantgarde
rock".
Contains a colossal cover of Jimi Hendrix' "Red House".
"What Darby Slick does with the Slick - the guitar of his own invention - is beyond the realm of other woebegone fret-bound players. It is the slide guitar from outer space and he is the only musician who has it."
JOEL SELVIN/San Francisco Chronicle
"Darby's innovative fretless guitar work results in the newest and most expressive slide sounds of the nineties. Awesome, amazing, no one will be able to match his chops. A listener's must."
